Bishwanath Singh :
We have seen many people often talking of Gandhism.Let us have a glimpse of what Gandhism means to us!Gandhism is a collection of inspirations, principles, beliefs and philosophy of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (known as Mahatma Gandhi), who was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian Independence... Movement. It is a composite body of ideas and principles that describes the inspiration, vision and the life work of Gandhi. The term also encompasses what Gandhi's ideas, words and actions mean to people around the world, and how they used them for guidance in building their own future. Gandhism also permeates into the realm of the individual human being, non-political and non-social. A Gandhian can mean either an individual who follows, or a specific philosophy which is attributed to, Gandhism.Gandhi Ji while talking about it had said "There is no such thing as 'Gandhism', and I do not want to leave any sect after me. I do not claim to have originated any new principle or doctrine. I have simply tried in my own way to apply the eternal truths to our daily life and problems.". He said "The opinions I have formed and the conclusions I have arrived at are not final. I may change them tomorrow." “I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and non-violence are as old as the hills.” he added. Mahatma Gandhi was in true sense the Bodhisattva of the twentieth century. The pivotal and defining element of Gandhism is satya, a Sanskrit word usually translated into English as truth, whose literal meaning is 'what actually is' (deriving from the root verb as meaning 'to be'). The principle of Satya as espoused by Gandhi needed that Truth must pervade all considerations of politics, ego, society and convention. Gandhi did not consider himself to be a pacifist, socialist or on any definable spectrum of politics. He professed to adhere to the pure, existing facts of life to make his decisions. Gandhi’s commitments to non-violence, human freedom, equality and justice arose from his personal examination. Truth is interpreted subjectively. Gandhism does not demand that its adherents agree to Gandhi’s own principles to the letter, but in spirit. If one honestly believes that violence is sometimes necessary, it is truthful to believe in it. When Gandhi returned to India in the middle of World War I, he said he would have supported the British in the war. It would have been wrong, according to Gandhi, to demand equal rights for Indians in the Empire, and not contribute to its defense. On the other hand, by the time of the advance of the Japanese in World War II, Gandhi had given up notions of fighting alongside the British and argued for nonviolence instead. Gandhiji the father of the nation was seen having been profounder of Ahimsa(non-violence).Gandhi Ji had developed a way of life by his constant “experimenting with truth” — a phrase that formed the subtitle to his autobiography. He was prepared to learn through trial and error, often admitting to mistakes and changing his behaviour accordingly. This was particularly notable when Gandhi stopped all nationwide civil resistance in 1922 after the Chauri Chaura incident. He would forsake political independence for truth — believing that Indians should not become murderers and commit the very evils they were accusing the British of perpetrating in India.Gandhism is more about the spirit of Gandhi’s journey to discover the truth, than what he finally considered to be the truth. It is the foundation of Gandhi’s teachings, and the spirit of his whole life to examine and understand for oneself, and not take anybody or any ideology for granted.Let us hope that we will derive lesson from Gandhism and stick to them for carrying success in our life!

A co-relation between Love & friendship as flashed by me on the f.b. on October 2,2010.
Bishwanath Singh :
It has been noticed that one often talks of love & friendsip.Let us see if there is any co-relation between them!Love is closely related to friendship in that it involves strong interpersonal ties between two or more people. In terms of interpersonal relationships, there are two distinct types of love: (A)Platonic love:... is a deep and non-romantic connection or friendship between two individuals. It is love where the sexual element does not enter. &(B)Romance (love): considered similar to Platonic love, but involves sexual elements. Engaging in a romantic relationship can change the dynamics of a platonic relantionship; in the event of a break-up, close friends who become romantically involved may experience difficulty in successfully resuming a comfortable friendship.Hope, it is clear to all.

A homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his Birth Day as flashed by me on the f.b. on October 2,2010.
Bishwanath Singh :
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on the 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, a coastal town which was then part of the Bombay Presidency, British India. His father, Karamchand Gandhi who belonged to the Hindu Modh community, served as the diwan (Prime Minister) of Porbander state, a small princely state in the Kathiawar ...Agency of British India His grandfather was Uttamchand Gandhi, fondly called Utta Gandhi. His mother, Putlibai, who came from the Hindu Pranami Vaishnava community, was Karamchand's fourth wife, the first three wives having apparently died in childbirth. Growing up with a devout mother and the Jain traditions of the region, the young Mohandas absorbed early the influences that would play an important role in his adult life; these included compassion for sentient beings, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, and mutual tolerance between individuals of different creeds While the Indian National Congress and Gandhi called for the British to quit India, the Muslim League passed a resolution for them to divide and quit, in 1943. The Mahatma is believed to have been opposed to the partition during independence and suggested an agreement which required the Congress and Muslim League to cooperate and attain independence under a provisional government, thereafter, the question of partition could be resolved by a plebiscite in the districts with a Muslim majority. When Jinnah called for Direct Action, on 16 August 1946, Gandhi was infuriated and visited the most riot prone areas to stop the massacres, personally. He made strong efforts to unite the Indian Hindus, Muslims and Christians and struggled for the emancipation of the "untouchables" in Hindu societyOn the 14th and 15th of August, 1947 the Indian Independence Act was invoked and the following carnage witnessed a displacement of up to 12.5 million people in the former British Indian Empire with an estimates of loss of life over several hundred thousand of people. On 30 January 1948, Gandhi was shot while he was walking to a platform from which he was to address a prayer meeting. The assassin, Nathuram Godse, was a Hindu nationalist with links to the extremist Hindu Mahasabha, who held Gandhi responsible for weakening India by insisting upon a payment to Pakistan. Godse and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte were later tried and convicted; they were executed on 15 November 1949. Gandhi's memorial at Rāj Ghāt, New Delhi, bears the epigraph "Hē Ram( "Oh God".) These are widely believed to be Gandhi's last words after he was shot. Gandhi's birthday is the 2nd October, is a national holiday in India, Gandhi Jayanti. On the 15 of June 2007, it was announced that the "United Nations General Assembly" has "unanimously adopted" a resolution declaring the 2nd October as "the International Day of Non-Violence.Gandhi Ji firmly believed in simplicity, truth and non-violence and practiced them all over his life. Let us pay our respectful homage to him on his Birth Anniversary that falls on the 2nd of October!

A homage to Lal Bahadur Shastri on his Birth Day by me as flashed on the f.b on October 2,2010.
Bishwanath Singh :Lal Bahadur was born on the 2nd of October 1904 in Mughalsarai, United Provinces, British India to Sharada Shrivastava Prasad, a poor school teacher, who later became a clerk in the Revenue Office at Allahabad and Shrimati Ramdulari Devi. When he was three months old, he slipped out of his mother's arms into a cowherde...r's basket at the ghats of the Ganges. The dogherder, who had no children, took the child as a gift from God and took him home. Lal Bahadur's parents lodged a complaint with the police, who traced the child, and returned him to his parentsHis father died when he was only a year and a half old. His mother took him and his two sisters to her father's house and settled down there.Lal Bahadur stayed at his grandfather Hazari Lal's house till he was ten. He studied upto class IV in Railway School Mughalsarai. Since there was no high school in their town, he was sent to Varanasi where he stayed with his maternal uncle and joined the Harischandra High School. While in Varanasi, Shastri once went with his friends to see a fair on the other bank of the Ganges. On the way back he had no money for the boat fare. Instead of borrowing from his friends, he jumped into the river and swam to the other bank as a young boy/ Lal Bahadur loved reading books and was fond of Guru Nanak's verses. He revered Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Indian nationalist, social reformer and freedom fighter. After hearing a speech of Mahatma Gandhi at Varanasi in 1915, he dedicated his life to the service of the country. He also dropped his surname Shrivastav, as it indicated his caste and he was against the caste system. During the non-cooperation movement of Mahatma Gandhi in 1921, he joined processions in defiance of the prohibitory order. He was arrested but let off as he was a minor. He then enrolled at the nationalist Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi. During his four years there, he was greatly influenced by the lectures of Dr. Bhagawandas on philosophy & bcame close friend of Tribhuan Narain Singh.. Upon completion of his course at Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1926, he was given the title Shastri ("Scholar"). The title was a bachelor's degree awarded by the Vidya Peeth, but it stuck as part of his name..In 1927, Shastri married Lalita Devi of Mirzapur. In spite of the prevailing hefty dowry tradition, Shastri accepted only a charkha and a few yards of khadi as dowry. In 1930, he threw himself into the freedom struggle during Mahatma Gandhi's Salt Satyagraha. He was imprisoned for two and a half years[.Once, while he was in prison, one of his daughters fell seriously ill. He was released for fifteen days, on the condition that he not take part in the freedom movement. However, his daughter died before he reached home. After performing the funeral rites, he voluntarily returned to prison, even before the expiration of the period[.A year later, he asked for permission to go home for a week, as his son had contracted influenza. The permission was given, but his son's illness was not cured in a week. In spite of his family's pleadings, he kept his promise to the jail officers and returned to the prisonLater, he worked as the Organizing Secretary of the Parliamentary Board of U.P. in 1937. In 1940, he was sent to prison for one year, for offering individual Satyagraha support to the freedom movement. On 8 August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi issued the Quit India speech at Gowalia Tank in Mumbai, demanding that the British leave India. Shastri, who had just then come out after a year in prison, traveled to Allahabad. For a week, he sent instructions to the freedom fighters from Jawaharlal Nehru's hometown, Anand Bhavan. A few days later, he was arrested and imprisoned until 1946.Shastri spent almost nine years in jail in total[13]. During his stay in prison, he spent time reading books and became familiar with the works of western philosophers, revolutionaries and social reformers. Following India's independence, Shastri was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in his home state, Uttar Pradesh. He became the Minister of Police and Transport under Govind Ballabh Pant's Chief Ministership. As the Transport Minister, he was the first to appoint women conductors. As the minister in charge of the Police Department, he ordered that Police use jets of water instead of lathis to disperse unruly crowdsIn 1951, he was made the General Secretary of the All-India Congress Committee, with Jawaharlal Nehru as the Prime Minister. He was directly responsible for the selection of candidates and the direction of publicity and electioneering activities. He played an important role in the landslide successes of the Congress Party in the Indian General Elections of 1952, 1957 and 1962.In 1951, Nehru nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. He served as the Minister of Railways and Transport in the Central Cabinet from 1951 to 1956. In 1956, he offered his resignation after a railway accident at Mahbubnagar that led to 112 deaths. However, Nehru did not accept his resignationThree months later, he resigned accepting moral and constitutional responsibility for a railway accident at Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu that resulted in one hundred forty four deaths. While speaking in the Parliament on the incident, the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru had stated that he was accepting the resignation because it would set an example in constitutional propriety and not because Shastri was in any way responsible for the accident .Shastri's unprecedented gesture was greatly appreciated by the citizens. In 1957, Shastri returned to the Cabinet following the General Elections, first as the Minister for Transport and Communications, and then as the Minister of Commerce and Industry[. In 1961, he became Minister for HomeAs Union Home Minister he was instrumental in appointing the Committee on Prevention of Corruption under the Chairmanship of K. SanthanamJawaharlal Nehru died in office on 27 May 1964 and left a void. The then Congress Party President K. Kamaraj was instrumental in making and installing Shastri as Prime Minister on the 9th Jun 1964. Shastri, though mild-mannered and soft-spoken, was a Nehruvian socialist and thus held appeal to those wishing to prevent the ascent of conservative right-winger Morarji Desai. Shastri worked by his natural characteristics to obtain compromises between opposing viewpoints, but in his short tenure he was ineffectual in dealing with the economic crisis and food shortage in the nation. However, he commanded a great deal of respect in the Indian populace, and he used it to gain advantage in pushing the Green Revolution in India; which directly led to India becoming a food-surplus nation, although he did not live to see it. During the 22-day war with Pakistan, Lal Bahadur Shastri created the slogan of "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" ("Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer"), underlining the need to boost India's food production. Apart from emphasizing the Green Revolution, he was instrumental in promoting the White Revolution. Highly impressed by a visit to the Kaira district in October 1964, he urged the rest of the country to learn from the successful experiment at Anand. The National Dairy Development Board was formed in 1965 during his tenure as Prime Minister. Though he was Socialist, Shastri stated that India cannot have a regimented type of economy. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he visited Russia, Yugoslavia, England, Canada and Burma in 1965. After the declaration of ceasefire with tetwenty one day war with Pak., Shastri and Pakistani President Muhammad Ayub Khan attended a summit in Tashkent (former USSR, now in modern Uzbekistan), organized by Kosygin. on the 11th of January 1966 where he had died soon after signing the Tashkent declaration after suffering severe heart attack.Such person is rarely born on this worldly earth. He had lived & died for welfare of his motherland in great service to Her. Let us commemorate his memories and pay our respectful homage to him on his Birth day! What’s a nice coincidence! A homage to Bapu as flashed by me on the f.b. on October 1,2010.
Bishwanath Singh :Mahatma Gandhi ,the father of our Nation whose birth anniversary will be celebrated on the 2nd of October was known for his simplicity, passion & wisdom. Let us have a glimpse of it! Mahatma Gandhi had earnestly believed that a person involved in public service should lead a most austere and simple life. He first displ...ayed this principle when he gave up wearing western-style clothing, which he associated with wealth and success. When he returned to India he renounced the western lifestyle he led in South Africa, where he had enjoyed a successful legal practice. Gandhi dressed to be accepted by the poorest person in India, advocating the use of homespun cloth (khadi). He and his followers adopted the practice of weaving their own clothes from thread they themselves spun on a charkha, and encouraged others to do so. While Indian workers were often idle due to unemployment, they had often bought their clothing from industrial manufacturers owned by British interests. The Swadeshi Movement held that if Indians made their own clothes, it would deal an economic blow to the British establishment in India. Gandhi an simplicity was a sign and expression of swadeshi principles. Consequently, the charkha was later incorporated into the flag of the Indian National Congress. He subsequently wore a dhoti for the rest of his life to express the simplicity of his life. The practice of giving up unnecessary expenditure, embracing a simple lifestyle and washing his own clothes, Gandhi Ji called "reducing himself to zero On one occasion he returned the gifts bestowed to him from the Natals for his diligent service to the community. Gandhi Ji spent one day of each week in silence. He believed that abstaining from speaking brought him inner peace and made him a better listener. This influence was drawn from the Hindu principles of silence( mauna) and peace(shanti) .On such days he communicated with others by writing on paper. For three and a half years, from the age of thirty seven, Gandhi refused to read newspapers, claiming that the tumultuous state of world affairs caused him more confusion than his own inner unrest. After reading John Ruskin's Unto This Last, he had decided to change his lifestyle and create a commune called Phoenix Settle men. He was of the firm view that the God has no religion. i. Gandhi dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya. He tried to achieve this by learning from his own mistakes and conducting experiments on himself. Although Mahatama Gandhi was not the originator of the principle of non-violence ,but he was the first to apply it in the political field on a huge scale and that lead him to be called Mahatma( a great saint).Let us join all to pay our respectable homage to Him! Such person is rarely born on this worldly earth. He was born on the 2nd of October 1869 at Porbandar in the then Bombay Presidency in the then British India and on the 30th January 1948 , Gandhi JI was assassinated when he was shot while walking to a platform from which he was to address a prayer meeting at New Delhi. Let us rejoice celebrating His Birth Anniversary with great festivity and learn lesson from His life to be kind and helpful to others and strive hard to maintain peace all over the globe!
