Bishwa Nath Singh: Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh guru, was born on April 15, 1469 in Talwandi (Shaikhupur),now in Pakistan. His father was Mehta Kalu (Mehta Kalyan Dass)and his mother was Mata Tripta. His older sister was Bibi Nanaki. From his child hood ,he was seen as a special figure and looked like God himself in a human form. He was married with Sulakhni Ji daughter of Mool Chand Ji at the age of about nineteen. His marriage was solemnized in the town of Batala. The marriage party had come from the town of Sultanpur Lodhi Two sons namely Sri Chand and Lakhmi Dass were born after seven & nine years of his marriage respectively. Sri Chand founded an ascetic sect known as the Udasis. Later Gurus used to visit Sri Chand as a revered ascetic. The Udasis served as guardians of the historical Sikh sites until the British period. As the founder of a new religion, Guru Nanak set down strong foundations for his successors and his followers. The actual birth date of Guru Nanak is 15 April. However, the traditionalist believers go for November birth due to obvious reasons which were first challenged by Karam Singh's research. Karam Singh's book Katak ke Visakh establishes how Guru Nakak's birth falls in April and not November Guru Nanak was born on November 1469, now celebrated as Prakash Divas of Guru Nanak, into a Bedi Kshatriya family in the village of Rāi Bhōi dī Talwandī, now called Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan Rai Bular Bhatti, the local landlord and Guru Nanak’s sister Bibi Nanaki were the first people who recognized divine qualities in Guru Nanak. They encouraged and supported Guru Nanak to study and travel .He had laid down the very foundation of Sikhism as its first Guru..One of the most important beliefs of Sikhism that Guru Nanak Dev Ji set down is that it's necessary to help the needy and the poor. He was always ready to help the poor and he served food to them. In fact, he often invited the needy and the poor into his house. Another example of Guru Ji helping the poor and the needy occurred while he was working as a storekeeper. Guru Nanak Dev Ji used to spend a large part of his wages in order to feed the poor and the hungry. Guru Nanak Dev Ji also taught us that there is one God and he is the Truth and Ultimate Reality. To emphasize this point, Guru Ji said, "There is neither Hindu nor Muslim." In God's eyes, the labels of Hindu, Muslim, Jew, Christian, etc. don't mean anything. Guru Ji also taught that God has created the universe and he is everywhere. In order to spread these messages, Guru Nanak Dev Ji took four long journeys. On these journeys, Guru Ji got many followers and was able to relate his message to many people.Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught us that all human beings regardless of religion, race, faith, color, wealth, caste, and gender are created equal. As the end approached Guru Nanak would frequently test the devotion of his sons and nearest followers and in doing so demonstrate their state of mind to one another. There were numerous such occasions and one particular devotee, Baba Lehna, rose to eminence because he never faltered in his faith in Guru Nanak.Guru Nanak appointed Bhai Lehna as the successor Guru, renaming him as Guru Angad Dev, meaning ‘one’s very own’ or ‘part of you’. Shortly after proclaiming Baba Lehna as the next Guru, Nanak died on September 22, 1539 in Kartarpur, at the age of 70 thus laying down the foundations for a great religion.
