Bishwanath Singh: Dussehra is the festival of victory of good over evil, which marks the defeat of Ravana (king of monsters) by Lord Rama. On the Dussehra Ram killed the king of demon Ravana and rescued his wife Sita from his kingdom Lanka. The war against Ravan was lasted for ten days thats why Dussehra is celebrated for ten days. The main attractions of Dussehra is Ramlila – a personification of the life of Lord Rama. In most of north India during the first nine days a table is taken out each day in procession on a float depending on the importance of the episode in Rama’s life and crowd throng the streets to see the spectacle of the drama performance. Ramlila based on the epic Ramayana and very popular in north Indian villages and even cities. On the tenth day of Dussehra, the huge effigies of Ravan, his son and brother are set to fire. The character dress like Ram and his brother Laksham fire lighted arrows to the large effigies, which are filled up with firecrackers. With a deafening crackling sound the effigies burn to the end. The whole drama is very exciting and entice a huge crowd to see the Ramlila.Dussehra has a huge religious significance in Hindus life. There are lots of legends follows for Dussehra. There is a little known story about Dussehra in Bengali mythology. According to Bengali traditions, Ram revered mother Durga during the Navratra, worshiped all the day and set out the vijayadasami or the Dussehra day after worshiping the sami tree to conquer Ravan and attained victory after killing him. Hence in Hindus, the sami tree has become the symbol of victory in any projects. Even some part of India people exchange leaves with one another as a mark of wishing success in life. In places like Bengal people revere goddess Durga in that occasion. Worship of goddess Durga signifies the female supremacy in Indian mythology where gods who unable to destroy demon take shelter of goddess Durga and with her power she destroyed the demon. In North India – Ramlila is the main attraction in northern India where the festival is celebrated the victory of Ram over the demon king Ravan. The festival is celebrated the cities and villages with much gusto. Huge effigies of Ravan and his son and brother are set to fire. Enticing firework and huge fair and feasts are organized. It is also an important festival for Sikhs. Some places like Delhi and Punjab, Hindus and Sikhs celebrate the festival together. In Himachal Pradesh - In Himachal Pradesh a week long fair at Kullu is a part of the Dusehhra celebrations. From the little temples in the hills, deities are brought out in procession to the Kullu ground with merriment, music and color. The presiding deity is Lord Raghunathji. The celebration begins at least ten days in advance.Apart from Ramayana, there is another legend associated with the festival of Dussehra, that had been mentioned in the Mahabharata. As per the legend, the Pandavas underwent a period of exile, that included the 12 years of dwelling in the forest followed by one more year of exile incognito. During the latter period of the exile, it was compulsory for the Pandavas to lay aside, the weapons that they possessed for the entire year. Hence, the Pandavas, secreted the weapons under a 'Shami' tree in the vicinity of their opted place for incognito residence. After the completion of the year, the Pandavas returned to the spot and found their weapons intact. In return, the Pandavas, worshipped both the 'Shami' tree and the Goddess Durga. Later, the Kauravas invaded the area, in search of the Pandavas. However, upon finishing their worship, the Pandavas fought the battle and won the contest comprehensively. Since then, the day when the Pandavas won the battle is known as 'Vijayadashami.' Interestingly, even today in Mysore, the 'Shami' tree finds commemoration during the renowned Navaratri celebration and people exchange 'Shami' leaves and wish each other. Celebrations of Dussehra festival varies from one region to another region in the country. In the Northern part of India, the festival is celebrated with much pomp and gaiety. During the period of the festivities, the Ramlila - a dramatization of the Ramayana is enacted by professional dance companies and amateur troupes all over northern part of the country. Crackers are burnt by the people and big melas or fairs are also organized during that period. On the 10th day of Dussehra, the effigies of Ravana, his giant brother Kumbhkarna and son Meghnad are burnt, that signify the victory of good over evil and the festivities come to close. Festivities of Southern, Western and Eastern India is quite different from Northern India. In these parts of the country, the festival is celebrated with much fervour and splendour. In the city of Mysore, on Vijayadashami day, the goddess Chamundeshwari is worshipped and then borne in a Golden Ambari (Elephnat-mounted throne), in a huge procession, from the historical Mysore Palace to the Banni Mantapa or Shami Pavilion. In West Bengal, Dusshera is celebrated as Durga Puja, for nine days, the idols of the goddess Durga is worshipped and on the 10th day the idols are immersed in pond or river. Bengali people celebrate the Dussehra as a part of their main festival Durga Puja. First nine days are collectively referred to as 'Navratri' and the day 10 marks the end of Durga Puja celebration. However, in Kullu-Manali, Dussehra is celebrated three days after the rest of the country celebrates. According to legend, during ancient times the lesser powerful kings had to participate in the celebration held at Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Palace in Lahore. During those days it used to take around three days for the weaker kings to return to their own kingdom to celebrate the festival of Dussehra. The ritual is still followed by the people of the Kullu and Manali regions, hence it is celebrated three days behind the schedule.Dussehra signifies the triumph of Good over Evil and it is also considered to be an auspicious day to begin new things in life. In the Northern part of India, Dussehra commemorates the victory of Lord Rama, over Ravana, the ruler of Lanka, who according to the mythological Ramayana had abducted Sita, the wife of Rama. However, in the Southern, Eastern and Western India, the festival is celebrated as Navaratri, which ends with Vijayadashmi. Here the same festival commemorates the legend in which the Goddess Durga, vanquishes the demon Mahishasura.Let us pay our humble obeisance's to all different nine facets of Goddess Durga(Goddess Shailputri,Goddess Brahmcharini,Goddess Chandra Ghanta,Goddess Kushmanda,Goddess Askandh Mata,Goddess Katyayini,Goddess Kal Ratri Mahamaya.Goddess Maha Gauri & Goddess Sidh Dhatri) who are worshipped on nine different days and seek their bliss for well-being of all living-being of this universe!

Navaratri is a nine day festival that honors the Mother Goddess in all her manifestations, including Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. It's a festival full of worship and dance. The festival culminates with Dussehra, the victory of good over evil, on the tenth day.Usually in late September/early October each year. In 2010,... Navaratri starts on October 8 and finishes with Dussehra on October 17. The dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar. The festival is celebrated all over India but in different ways. The most flamboyant and renowned Navaratri celebrations can be seen in western India, throughout the state of Gujurat and in Mumbai. In West Bengal, Navaratri and Dussehra are celebrated as Durga Puja.Hindus observe ten days of ceremonies, rituals, fasts and feasts in honor of the supreme mother goddess. It begins with the fast of “Navaratri”, and ends with the festivities of “Dusshera” and “Vijayadashami.” The name “Durga” means “inaccessible”, and she is the personification of the active side of the divine “shakti” energy of Lord Shiva. In fact, she represents the furious powers of all the male gods, and is the ferocious protector of the righteous, and destroyer of the evil. Durga is usually portrayed as riding a lion, and carrying weapons in her many arms.Over the course of the nine days, the Mother Goddess is worshiped in her various forms -- Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. Each goddess is worshiped for three days in turn, starting with Durga who destroys negative tendencies. Next is Lakshmi who bestows good virtues and fortune, and last is Saraswati, who instills wisdom and spiritual knowledge. The worship, accompanied by fasting, takes place in the mornings. Evenings are for feasting and dancing.Let us pay our humble obeisabce's to Goddess Durga!
