Bishwa Nath Singh:

Lord Ganesh is known as the God of knowledge and the remover of obstacles is also the older son of Lord Shiva. Lord Ganesha is also called Vinayak ( knowledgeable ) or Vighneshwer (God to remove obstacles). He is worshipped, or at least re...membered, in the beginning of any auspicious performance for blessings and auspiciousness. He has four hands, elephant's head and a big belly. His vehicle is a tiny mouse. In his hands he carries a rope (to carry devotees to the truth), an axe (to cut devotees' attachments), and a sweet dessert ball -laddoo- (to reward devotees for spiritual activity). His fourth hand's palm is always extended to bless people. He is having a unique combination of his elephant-like head and a quick moving tiny mouse vehicle represents tremendous wisdom, intelligence, and presence of mind. Although there are diverse mythological stories exist about God Ganesha, the following story is widely believed to be the relevant one by many Devotees. . Once His mother Goddess Parvathi wanted to take bath in Her house and She wanted immediately somebody to put as a security. By Her Godly power She made a boy from mud and told him not to allow inside any body till she finished bathing. After some time God Shiva came there and stopped by Lord Ganesh. Lord Shiva got angry and cut off his head, as he thought Lord Ganesh as a stranger. After finishing bath Goddess Parvathi came to know this and regretted much. To console his consort Lord Shiva asked his servants to bring the head of any living creature that might be sleeping by putting its head towards north. They brought the head of an elephant and that was fitted to Lord Ganesh by his father Lord Shiva. This was how, he came to have the head of an elephant.Lord Shiva then made His son worthy of worship at the beginning of all undertakings, marriages, expeditions, studies, etc. He intended that the annual worship of Ganesha should take place on the 4th day of the bright half of Bhadnpada. Without the Grace of Sri Ganesha and His help nothing whatsoever can be achieved. No action can be undertaken without His support, Grace or blessing and that is how His significance could be well described.Let us join all to pay our humble obeisance's to Lord Ganesh on the eve of Diwali and seek His bliss for well-being of all living-being of this universe!

On the eve of Diwali, we also worship Goddess Laxmi together with the deity of Lord Ganesh.I will describe about the significance of Goddess Laxmi seperately.

Bishwa Nath Singh:
Goddess Laxmi, the consort of Lord Narayana popularly known as Lord Vishnu, is the ruler of eight kinds of wealth. It is believed that the household where she is not worshipped never gets prosperred.Wealth and success never ever knocks at t...he doors of those households. As she is the beloved of Lord Vishnu, you need to accord respect to Lord Vishnu otherwise you can't expect Laxmi to stay at your place. There goes the saying that Goddess Laxmi travels on owl if she travels alone and if she travels with Lord Vishnu then she travels on Garuda. Now these two differenet situations signifies two different aspects of prosperity. When Goddess Laxmi travels alone on owl, then the people who acquire wealth gets intellectually blind and when she travels with Vishnu , then the person acquires wisdom along with wealth . This pooja needs to be performed using strict rituals ,mantras and samagri by experts. Dhan Laxmi is worshipped for wealth,Vijaya Laxmi is worshipped for victory in different fields or understakings, Sanatan Laxmi is being worshipped for children, Vidya Laxmi is worshipped for knowledge,Soubhagya Laxmi is worshipped for marriage and happy married life, Dhanya Laxmi is worshipped by the farming community. It is of common belief that on the eve of Diwali during night,Goddess Laxmi travels with Lord Vishnu and visit every household/shops/markets/centers where Goddess Laxmi is worshipped along with Lord Ganesh and fulfill desires of worshippers.
