Bishwa Nath Singh:
Goddess Durga is well-known form of Sakti ( energy or power) worshiped for her gracious as well as very devotional aspect. She is the holy mother of the Universe who represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of dynamism... that a woman can acquire and possess. The manifestation of Goddess Durga is said to emerge from her formless essence as both are inseparable to each other. She is also referred by many other holy names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali. In the form of Parvati, she is known widely as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva who happens to be the mother of her two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya and a daughter called Jyoti. Goddess Durga is also widely known as the destroyer of demons who is worshiped during an annual festival called Durga Puja, especially very popular all over India but in particular in the West Bengal State of our country. There has been endless aspects of Durga as very well described in the Puranas and other ancient literatures ( holy books). She is usually pictured as having ten arms holding Sword, Conch, Discus, Rosary, Bell, Wine cup, Shelve, Bow, Arrow, and Spear. She is often shown riding a lion from which comes from her holy and august name “Sinhvahini,’ who stands astride the king of beasta. She is gorgeously dressed in royal red cloth and has several ornaments decorating her glamorous personage. Her hair is dressed up in a crown which then flows out in long luxuriant tresses that are darkly luminous and soothing to the eye. The various tools reflect the eminent supremacy that helps in controlling the universe and obey her will and carry out her wishes truthfully. Goddess Durga exists eternally, always abiding in her own sweet nature and inhabits the hearts and minds of her ecstatic devotees. As Shakti (power) she shapes, nurtures, and dissolves names and forms, while as subtle spiritual energy called Kundalini, she lights the lotuses for the seven centers of awareness in the sacred human body. Goddess Durga killed the powerful demon Mahish and all his great demon followers. It has been very well described in our holy epics that when demonic forces create imbalance all Gods and Goddesses unite becoming one divine force called Shakti or Durga and that is why her worship has special significance for all of us who have come on this worldly earth. Let us join to offer our humble obeisance to the lotus feet of Goddess Durga on the eve of Chaiti Navratra that begins today and seek her bliss for well-being of all living –being of this universe!
