The sixty fourth annual Cannes Film Festival is being held from May 11 to May 22, 2011. American actor Robert De Niro has been the President of the Jury for the main competition and French filmmaker Michel Gondry will head the jury for the short film competition. South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho has been announced as the head of the jury for the Caméra d'Or prize, which has been awarded to the best first-time filmmaker.

The opening film on the sixty fourth annual Cannes Film Festival was Midnight in Paris, written and directed by Woody Allen. Mélanie Laurent was the hostess of the opening and will be of closing ceremonies. Italian film director Bernar...do Bertolucci was presented with the inaugural Honorary Palme d'Or Award at the opening ceremony of the festival. Gus Van Sant's Restless had opened the Un Certain Regard section. Jailed Iranian film directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof were honoured at the festival[ Goodbye by Rasoulof and Panahi's This Is Not a Film were screened at the festival, and Panahi was awarded the Carrosse d'Or. Four female directors feature in the main competition: Australian Julia Leigh, Japan's Naomi Kawase, Scottish director Lynne Ramsay and France's own Maïwenn Le Besc. The Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee who was set to walk the Cannes red Rani was supposed to make an appearance on the French Riviera alongwith designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and filmmaker Karan Johar, but has bowed out as her father is unwell. Now Dhankar will be walking the red carpet for Chivas in Indian ethnic wear. Dhankar, who is the first Miss India going to Cannes, said she had no idea that she would be lucky enough to attend the prestigious film fest this year.Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had worn a Sabyasachi creation at the premiere of 'Raavan' at Cannes last year and the designer is surprised at the opportunity to physically present at the fest this time.She is bound to have her international exposure.Let us wish the festival a great success and congratulate all those winners!

Cannes was the only city I didn't visit while in the South of France in 2009.
