A tribute to Dr. Namwar Singh, a great scholar of Hindi on the eve of his birth anniversary that falls today as flashed on the f.b on May 1,2011.

The birth anniversary of the most distinguished critic of the Hindi literature, Dr. Namwar Singh falls today who continues to be the Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International University ,Wardha of Gujrat.. He was born in a peasant family of Village Jiwanpur of District Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh State of India on the 1st May 1927.

Bishwa Nath Singh :
Dr. Namwar Singh was the most brilliant student right from his school days. He had his higher education at B.H.U.He got Ph. D. in Hindi Literature in 1953 from Banaras Hindu University, He was fond of writing poetry during his student da...ys. Soon he was influenced by Marxist thought, and joined the Progressive Writers movement. He published his first book of essays, Bakalam Khud, in 1951. Later he turned to literary criticism, and has published a number of works. He also edits the Hindi quarterly Alochana( Crticism) He had taught at B.H. U , Sagar and Jodhpur Universities. He had contested by-election to the Parliament way back in 1958 from Chandauli Parliamentary Seat in Uttar Pradesh on the ticket of Communist Party but he was defeated. In 1971, he was honored with Shahitya Academy Award that is given each year, since 1955, by Sahitya Akademi (India's National Academy of Letters), to writers and their works, for their outstanding contribution to the upliftment of Indian literature and Hindi literature in particular for his Literary Criticism for his book” Kavita Ke Naye Pratiman.” He was also honored with the "Bharat Bharati'' award. He is a distinguished Professor, administrator,critic besides being a well- reputed writer. His contribution in propagating Hindi as our national language is exemplary. Let us join to felicitate him on his birth day and wish very many happy return of the day to him!
